A Students’ Center is to be buildt in the new campus of Tianjin Polytechnic University. The campus is filled with stereotyped teaching buildings, the new Students‘ center must change to indicate its existance. How does this architecture provide a comfortable space for activities? More importantly, how does it bring about new ideas to the students’ rutine life ? Can we change the traditional concept of “floors" and make them vertical ?
The project turns conventional horizontal story to vertical layer, horizontal plan becomes section plan.For the purpose of lighting, smaller spaces are arranged outside while larger spaces are inside. The flexible ground floor can be used either for certain performance or improvised activities, which connecting circulation of school building, library and dormitory. The outer surfaces of the vertical layers are designed to be of different colors, improving the dull visual enviroment of the campus.
The vacant layers between functional layers serve as circulation, courtyard and visual channels, making every room has sufficient lighting and view of green and lake. Since the using peaks of functional layers are different from each other, the vacant layers are able to serve disparate activities across time.
The major part of the building is lifted to a height of 5m, so that the flexibility of the ground floor is maximized and a view of the lake through the building is possible.The flexible ground floor can be used either for certain performance or improvised activities, which connecting circulation of school building, library and dormitory. There is also a shortcut to the lakebank, where the lifted vertical layers provide shelds and shadows.
In order to garantee a broad space on the ground level plan and an uninterrupted view of the lake, the number of colunms must be limited. Mega steel frame and truss are chosen to serve as structure system. The trusses bear or hang the load of functional layers, supported by huge columns standing on the ground. Walls and floors joined as plate are cast-in-place in order to enhance the rigidity and stability.
